Abstract
Purpose: In this report, we studied the ametropia of the habitants¡¯ both in coast and inland area of Jeollanamdo.
Methods: We investigate the ametropia of 300 habitants¡¯ aged over 65 years in Jindo(coast area), Wando(coast area) and Gokseong County(inland area), respectively. The background of the room for refraction test is sunny and fluorescent lighting and the lumination of the window side is about 500lux. After examining the unaided visual acuity and auto-refractometer tests as an objective refraction test, we rectify the distance vision with Snellen chart test for 5m distance. And then we check up the rectified near visual acuity of them.
Results and Consideration: There is no distinct difference in the far distance spherical ametropia and astigmatism between the habitants¡¯, who have astigmatism within 1D and over¡under 2D, in coast area and inland area of Jeollanamdo. In the investigation of the cylindrical ametropia under 1D astigmatism with monocular vision criterion, there is large difference between the habitants¡¯ in coast area and inland area of Jeollanamdo. The habitants¡¯ of 7.3%(66 persons) in Gokseong County, 15.56%(140 persons) in Wando County and 14%(127 persons) in Jindo County have astigmatism with over 2D cylindrical ametropia, respectively. From this, we can estimate that the astigmatism with cylindrical ametropia of the habitants¡¯ in inland area is even lower than that of the habitants¡¯ in coast area. Also, the ametropia of the habitants¡¯ in coast area is much higher than that of the habitants¡¯ in inland area.
Conclusions: There is no remarkable difference in the spherical ametropia between the habitants¡¯ in coast area and inland area of Jeollanamdo. But, in the investigation of the cylindrical ametropia and the comparison with anisopia, more habitants in coast area have anisopia than in inland area. We estimate these effects result from the pterygium caused from the stimuli by the ultraviolet, wind and dust.
